What to Expect with Digital AP Exams: Key Changes Starting May 2025

The move to digital exams is primarily driven by concerns over test security. With paper exams, the possibility of exam material being compromised before the test is higher, as paper versions are shipped to thousands of locations weeks in advance. Digital exams, however, are more secure because they can be delivered in real-time through the Bluebook app, eliminating the risk of paper exams being lost or tampered with.

Beyond security, digital exams also offer a more streamlined, efficient test-taking process. For example, students will no longer need to spend time filling in bubbles on paper answer sheets, and schools won’t have to manage the logistics of handling and shipping completed exams.

In 2025, 28 AP subjects will be administered digitally, divided into two categories:

The Bluebook platform is designed to be user-friendly and works on various devices, including Mac, Windows, iPads, and Chromebooks. The exams can be taken using school-managed devices, and the College Board will provide schools with loaner devices and Wi-Fi support if necessary.

One of the key features of the Bluebook system is that it doesn’t require a continuous internet connection during the exam. Students need internet access only at the beginning to start the test and at the end to submit their responses. Even if the internet drops during the exam, students can continue without disruption, and there’s a backup window of up to four days for submitting answers in the event of a network failure.

The Bluebook platform also offers tools such as the ability to highlight and annotate text, mark questions for review, and eliminate answer choices—all features that help replicate the flexibility students are used to with paper exams.

Schools and AP coordinators will use a system called the “Test Day Toolkit” to administer the digital exams, ensuring that everything runs smoothly on the test day. Although digital exams introduce new logistics, the overall setup remains similar to that of paper exams. Digital exams will still be proctored in typical testing rooms such as classrooms and libraries, and students will still need the same number of proctors as before.

Additionally, students will be able to practice for digital AP exams through AP Classroom, which offers practice assessments that mimic the digital format. Bluebook also provides test previews and video tours to help students familiarize themselves with the platform.

The shift to digital AP exams in 2025 is a bold step toward modernizing the AP testing process. With enhanced security and a streamlined approach, students and teachers can expect a smoother, more efficient experience. However, it will require a period of adjustment for everyone involved. As schools gear up for this transition, the College Board is providing plenty of resources to ensure that students are prepared and confident when test day arrives.
